Chronic Pain Series: Medical Marijuana

What is Medical Marijuana?

Medical marijuana has been approved for medicinal use under Pennsylvania state law since 2016. Chronic pain is one of the more than twenty-three approved conditions in the United States that may benefit from cannabis-based therapy. According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 50 million Americans struggle with some form of chronic pain.

Conditions Treated with Medical Cannabis

There are many conditions that cause chronic pain and may be treated with medical cannabis. These include:

  • Multiple Sclerosis

  • Terminal Illness/Cancer

  • HIV/AIDS

  • Parkinson’s Disease

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease

  • Sickle Cell Anemia

  • Crohn’s Disease

  • Neuropathies

  • Spinal Cord Injury

  • Neurodegenerative Disc Disease

If you suffer from any of these, cannabis-based care could be an effective way to help manage your pain.

Benefits of Cannabis in Pain Management

In recent years, cannabis has become a popular option for pain relief. It offers several neurological and nervous system benefits such as reducing anxiety and inflammation. It may also reduce the body’s ability to perceive and process pain signals, helping patients find relief.

A Safer Alternative to Opiates

Unlike opioids, cannabis-based treatment does not carry the same harmful side effects. It has a minimal risk of overdose and is considered a safer alternative for managing chronic pain. To date, there have been no reported fatal overdoses from medical cannabis. However, it should never be used while driving or operating heavy machinery.

Methods of Using Medical Cannabis

A common misconception is that the only way to use cannabis for pain management is by smoking it. In reality, several other forms are available that may be easier or more suitable:

  • Pill

  • Oil

  • Tincture

  • Liquid

  • Vaporizer
